“The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change” – attributed to Greek philosopher Heraclitus. You’ve heard it. You KNOW that’s true. Now use it to your advantage.
Welcome to the journey of finding your way in the ever-changing industry. No matter your industry, it will change rapidly. The ways that we’re doing work now will change in the blink of an eye. For you to be prepared, you need to be open to change.
Your job in five years could not exist right now. Heck, my job didn’t exist five years ago.
The job market is always changing, growing and expanding with new opportunities, technologies and platforms to totally transform how companies work.
Your best course? Lean into the change and evolve with it. Track the market and see where the opportunities are. What trends are people using? Snapchat didn’t exist when I was in school and has transformed the media industry and how we create and consume short-form content. See where there is a market opportunity in your industry where you can jump and use your skills in a new way.
Being young means you can handle change better than most – so use that to your advantage.
Volunteer at work. Be willing to try new things at work, learn new skills and research new industries to ensure you’re ready for the next market trend. That way you’ll be ahead of the trend instead of constantly following it. Raise your hand to be the one that tries the new, latest trend.
And play. Experiment outside of work with different tools in an area of interest. Create Insta stories, create a podcast or design a mobile site. Who knows, in the process of experimentation, you could CREATE the next trend. And you’ll learn a hell of a lot in the process.
So go Kick Ass in your Career!
